Wonder who might be some of the more interesting burials at Riverside ?


How about Smith Stimmel. He was a former security guard to President Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln was shot, he went to law school and somehow moved to Fargo around the turn of the century and practiced law here in town. He was married in the church that I belong to and had his funeral in that same church in 1937.

Hanna, Louis Benjamin - (August 9, 1861 - April 23, 1948), US Congressman, North Dakota Governor. Elected to represent North Dakota in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1909 to 1913. Also served as a Member of the North Dakota State House of Representatives from 1895 to 1897, Member of the North Dakota State Senate from 1897 to 1901, and 1905 to 1909, Governor of North Dakota from 1913 to 1917, and Candidate for United States Senator from North Dakota in 1916 and 1926. Lemke, William Frederick - (August 13, 1878 - May 30, 1950), US Congressman. Elected to represent North Dakota in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1933 to 1941, and 1943 until his death in 1950. Also served as North Dakota State Attorney General in 1921, and Candidate for President of the United States in 1936. Plot: Southpark Section U

Spalding, Burleigh Folsom - (December 3, 1853 - March 17, 1934), US Congressman. Elected to represent North Dakota in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1899 to 1901, and 1903 to 1905. Also served as a State Court Judge. Plot: Southpark Section K

Fargo has the first funeral of Overseas Veteran in the State. Brought from far-off Coblez, Germany, where death occurred on April l5, 1919, the remains of Elmer H. Thompson, soldier of the American Expeditionary Force in France and later of the Army of Occupation in Germany, now repose in their last resting place in Riverside Cemetery Fargo.
